How to Get Testimonials From Clients - Even When They Are Too Busy to Write One!

During one of our yearly events, one of our students who ventured into offering copywriting services (a skill she got through The GeekPack Collective) shared an awesome win with us.

Her copywriting magic transformed one of her client's businesses, leading to increased sales and recurring revenue for her.

Despite this success, when I asked if her client had provided a testimonial, her answer was a surprising "No."

This made me realize that many service providers might be missing out on testimonials despite delivering exceptional results.

So in this post, I want to share a fantastic way to make it super easy for your clients to give you powerful testimonials.

But first, let’s understand why testimonials are so important for your freelance business.

Why Are Customer Testimonials Important?

Testimonials are a really effective way to build trust and credibility.

Ever scrolled through a website and stumbled upon those shiny reviews from other folks who've bought the product or tried out the service?

Well, there's a good reason they're there, and it's not just for show!

Think about it like this: when you're unsure about trying out a new cafe or buying that cool gadget online, don't you often ask your friends or check out the reviews?

That's the power of "social proof." In simple terms, we all like to follow the crowd. If others are loving it, chances are, we might too.

Those happy customer shout-outs don’t just show that people are loving what you’re selling; they also give you some serious street cred in your field.

It's like when a friend tells you about an amazing pizza place, and then three more friends rave about the same spot. Suddenly, that pizza place is "the spot," right?

Testimonials are like those raving friends for a business. They build trust in a genuine way.

Happy clients mean great referrals, but it’s super valuable to showcase testimonials to all your potential clients.

Because let’s be real, in a world full of flashy ads and marketing, a simple, honest thumbs-up from a fellow customer feels like a breath of fresh air.

The Secret to Great Testimonials

Watch on YouTube

This may surprise you, but the secret to getting great testimonials is to…

Write them yourself!

But don’t get me wrong - the idea isn't to fabricate feedback, but rather to facilitate the process for your busy clients.

After all, as service providers, we often have a better grasp of what we desire in a testimonial.

And to make sure you get exactly what you need, there are a few key questions you can ask.

These questions are meant to tell a captivating before-and-after story - illustrating the pain points clients faced before they started working with you and the transformation after.

Here are some examples of the questions you can ask clients to get a good testimonial:

  • How did you first learn about our business?
  • What challenges were you facing before we started working together?
  • What did those struggles mean for your business?

With these responses in hand, you can craft a genuine and compelling testimonial - sprinkling in relevant data to make it even better.

Alright, so you've got these awesome testimonials in your pocket - woohoo!

But what's next?

You can't just let them gather digital dust; you've gotta put them in the spotlight.

Think of your website as your virtual living room. You know that shiny trophy you won and you casually (but totally on purpose) placed on your coffee table?

Treat your testimonials like that. Whether it's on your homepage, product page, or even a dedicated "Happy Customers" section. Make sure they're in a place where visitors can't miss them.

And why not give your social media a sprinkle of that testimonial magic too? Share them in your posts, stories, or even turn them into cool graphics.

Testimonials do a great job of boosting your brand's image and making sure you’re seen as an authority in your field.

We went live in our Free Facebook Group to give some tips about this and Lydia even shared how you can turn testimonials into great social media posts!
